Prime Minister Jotham Napat is leading a high-level delegation to France this week for important meetings aimed at strengthening the relationship between Vanuatu and France. The PM left the country on Sunday, July 20, and will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The visit will focus on deepening cooperation, finding new investment opportunities, and discussing key issues that affect both countries.

Joining him is Deputy Prime Minister Johnny Koanapo, who travelled earlier. As Minister of Finance and Economic Management, according to a statement by the Prime Minister’s office, Minister Koanapo will make a key stop in Toulouse to meet with Airbus officials.

In 2019, Vanuatu signed a VT2 billion deal with Airbus to buy four A220 aircraft for Air Vanuatu. The plan was to expand the national airline and improve international connections. However, the deal stalled due to financial difficulties, the impact of COVID-19, and political changes.

The upcoming meeting in Toulouse could lead to renewed talks or new proposals with Airbus, signaling fresh interest in improving Vanuatu’s aviation sector.

Domestic Operations: The Backbone of Air Vanuatu

Currently, Air Vanuatu operates a fleet consisting of ATR 72-600 turboprops and Twin Otter aircraft, focusing on connecting the country’s numerous islands. This domestic network is crucial for the transportation of passengers, goods, and services, particularly to remote areas. The ATR 72-600, known for its efficiency on short regional routes, plays a pivotal role in maintaining these connections.

The Airbus A220 Ambitions

In 2019, the Vanuatu government signed a VT2 billion (approximately $16.5 million USD) deal with Airbus for the purchase of four A220 aircraft, aiming to modernize Air Vanuatu’s fleet and expand its international reach. However, due to financial constraints and the COVID-19 pandemic, the deal faced delays and was eventually canceled in 2022. The government had made significant pre-delivery payments, raising concerns about potential forfeiture. Airbus has confirmed that failure to complete an aircraft purchase agreement typically results in the loss of such payments.

Public Opinion: Domestic Stability vs. International Expansion

The debate over Air Vanuatu’s future direction has sparked public concern. Some argue that the government should prioritize strengthening domestic operations before pursuing international expansion. This perspective emphasizes the need for a stable and reliable domestic network, which is essential for the country’s connectivity and economic activities.

Conversely, there is a viewpoint that the government seeks to generate additional revenue through international routes. Expanding into international markets could potentially increase tourism and trade, contributing to the nation’s economic growth. However, this approach carries risks, especially considering the airline’s recent financial history and the challenges associated with international operations.

A Balanced Approach

Given the current circumstances, a balanced approach may be the most prudent. Focusing on strengthening domestic operations ensures that Air Vanuatu can provide reliable services to its citizens and maintain essential connections between islands. Simultaneously, the government could explore opportunities for international expansion cautiously, ensuring that any new ventures are financially sustainable and strategically aligned with the nation’s long-term goals.

The revival of Air Vanuatu presents an opportunity to reassess the country’s aviation strategy, balancing the need for domestic stability with the potential benefits of international expansion. By carefully considering both aspects, Vanuatu can work towards a resilient and prosperous aviation sector that serves the needs of its people and contributes to its economic development.

Conclusion:

The future of Air Vanuatu hinges on strategic decisions that balance domestic needs with international aspirations. By focusing on strengthening domestic operations and cautiously exploring international expansion, the government can ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for the national airline.
