PORT VILA — The Vanuatu Police Force (VPF) joined hands with the family of Tongoa, close friends, and members of the community on Monday, 27 October 2025, to bid a final farewell to the late Assistant Police Commissioner (North), Lt. Col. George Andrew Songi, who passed away on Saturday, 18 October 2025, while on official duty in Indonesia.

The solemn burial ceremony took place at the Port Vila Memorial Garden in Eratap, where officers from both the Vanuatu Police Force and the Vanuatu Mobile Force (VMF) performed a ceremonial drill as a final salute to honour a man who dedicated nearly four decades of his life to national service.

A Lifetime of Service

The late ACP North, George Andrew Songi, served the Republic of Vanuatu for 38 years, having joined the Police Force as a recruit in July 1988. Over the years, he worked across various departments within both the VPF and VMF, rising through the ranks to become Assistant Police Commissioner for the Northern Command.

During his career, he was widely respected as a leader who valued people above all, focusing on the professional growth and welfare of the officers under his command.

“He was a leader who always put human resources first. He made sure his officers had everything they needed to perform their duties,” said the Commissioner of Police, paying tribute during the ceremony.

Final Honours

The memorial service at Eratap was attended by senior police officers, government representatives, family members, and members of the Tongoa community, who came together to celebrate the life and legacy of one of the nation’s most dedicated law enforcement officers.

The VMF ceremonial unit conducted the Last Salute Drill, followed by a moment of silence and the presentation of the National Flag to the Songi family. Tears and tributes filled the air as colleagues shared stories of his mentorship, humility, and strength — qualities that defined his 38 years of service.

A Lasting Legacy

In a statement, the Vanuatu Police Force expressed deep sorrow at the loss of what it described as “a very resourceful and respected leader whose legacy will remain in the hearts and memories of all officers who served with him and under his command.”

ACP Songi’s passing follows the recent loss of other long-serving members of the Police Force, marking a difficult time for the institution. However, officers say his dedication and example will continue to guide the next generation of law enforcement in Vanuatu.

“His discipline, compassion, and leadership will live on through the men and women who wear the uniform,” the Commissioner added.

As the sun set over Eratap, the final salute echoed across the sea — a farewell to a son of Tongoa, a leader of the Northern Command, and a true servant of the Republic of Vanuatu.

Rest in Peace, Assistant Commissioner George Andrew Songi.
